Unreal Tournament Level

Level Editor: Unreal Tournament 4

During a week off, I wanted to make an arena shooter level. To do this, I used the Unreal Tournament 4 level editor due to my experience working in the Unreal Engine.

The timeline was the following:

  • 1 day for coming up with an idea and gathering references

  • 1 day for documentation

  • 3 days for whiteboxing and iterations

Day 1 - Initial Concept and Reference Gathering

Since it had been sometime since I worked on an Unreal Tournament level, the first thing I did was run through the metrics gym and some of my favourite maps such as Chill and Underland.

After I had reminded myself of the game’s scale, I decided to build a level that took place in a run down Gothic town.

Once the overall theme was established, I picked out what locations would be found in this town, and started gathering references for those locations.

Day 2 - 2D Layout and Documentation

Once I had established what areas would be in this level, my first step was to lay them out as a simple line diagram. Afterwards, I build a more formal 2D layout, area breakdown, and ingredients list for the Level Design Doc.

Day 3,4,5 - Whiteboxing and Iterations
